            An unusual nanny

Michael (not his real name) was an unremarkable child, and is an unremarkable adult, with normal interests and many friends

As a child he gained the attention of a remakable nanny.

Few of his friends or family liked coming to play at his house. Friends would complain about

feeling uneasy, as if they were being watched by someone hostile to their presence, no-one liked playing in the bedroom, since to get there you had to climb the stairs.

As a baby Michael's parents installed a baby alarm, a microphone in the nursery linked to a loudspeaker downstairs. From time to time the loudspeaker would emit a sharp click, but being a

cheap gadget, no-one thought anything of it. Also the sound of gentle singing could sometimes be heard. Alarmed that someone

was in their son's room the

parents would rush upstairs, to find nothing, eventually they dismissed this phenomenon as radio interference.

When Michael was three years old his grandmother came to visit, he remembers the visit vividly as he was asked to vacate his room for his grandmother and move into the empty box room next door.

This he was far from pleased about. He cried and screamed, as only a young child can, that he couldn't sleep in that room as it was the "white lady's room".

Unable to console the child, his parents took the easy way out and let him as he was putting the grandmother in the spare room.

                The first night passed

peacefully, the second night the house was woken by screaming.

Grandmother woke in the middle of the night claiming that a middle

aged woman had entered the bedroom, and tried to start a conversation about how Michael was such a well behaved boy. Being

            unsatisfied with her incoherrent

screaming the lady said that she didnt deserve to be a grandmother and disappeared.

Grandmother rarely visited after this, and always slept on the sofa downstairs.

Time passed without incident until Michael was in his early teens, when his sister was born. The young child was given the nursery and Michael moved into a

            loft conversion.

The old baby alarm was installed. It still
clicked. One night the family was at the cinema leaving a

baby-sitter in charge of the child. On their return they found the baby-sitter sobbing and terrified with a neighbour in the front room. The baby-sitter told that the baby

alarm had been clicking all evening, then she heard a noise as if a woman was singing, she went upstairs to investigate and saw the figure of a woman bending over

the cot singing to the baby. The

woman turned to her then vanished. The poor girl grabbed the baby flew downstairs and ran to the neighbours.

                Michael has only seen the

"white lady" once, shortly after moving into the loft extension, one night, he awoke and felt that he was not alone.

                Peeking from under his bed

sheets he saw the figuring of a woman come up the new stairs and wander around his room. She then turned put her finger to her lips,

as if to tell him not to make a
sound, Michael was too terrified to
breathe let alone shout, she then disappeared. He reckons that she came to investigate the new

            addition to the house.

Despite having only seen her once he does admit to feeling uneasy on the stairs, as does anyone who

visits the house. And no-one ever
pauses on the landing for everyone feel uneasy there.

Later the neighbour told how the last people who lived in the

house had moved out, after being disturbed by visitations, the previous owner was a middle aged woman who's son had died, and
            husband deserted her,
unable to live with the grief she

hanged herself. Apparently this woman had always loved children and would fuss over any young child
she would meet. Although the neighbour didn't know where she killed herself, there is

only one place suitable, and only one place where there is a distinct feeling of dread.
