This tiny village on the Buckinghamshire border can proudly boast the most haunted house in the county, Bisham Abbey (now
home to the training centre of the England football team).

Among its supernatural residents is the celebrated ghost of Lady
Hoby who accidentally killed her son, William, and has apparently
been earthbound ever since. The tale of how she killed her son
varies from legend to legend but it is generally agreed he was an
academically stupid boy and Lady Hoby would punish him for his
mistakes.

One story tells how he was beaten so hard with a ruler he
died. Another relates how he was locked in the tower and forgotten
about, slowly dying from starvation and exhaustion. Lady Hoby
apparently left him there while she went out riding. On her
excursion she met the young Queen Elizabeth I and went back to Windsor Castle with her. In the excitement she forgot about
William and no one else at Bisham Abbey knew he was locked in
the tower. Lady Hoby's ghost has been seen on several occasions,
sometimes trying to wash blood from her hands in true Lady
Macbeth fashion. There have also been wailing and groaning
sounds heard in the Abbey.

There are also tales of buried treasure, spectral lights and secret
tunnels at the Abbey. Nearby is Queen Elizabeth's well a spring
now on private ground but once visited by thousands of pilgrims
who believed the water had power to heal.
